National Advisory Council

Membership of the National Advisory Council of the Export Council of Australia comprises highly experienced practitioners in international trade, representatives of Corporate and Association Partners, sponsors and members.  Membership of the Council is by invitation from the Export Council of Australia Board of Directors. Written nominations must be directed to the Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The National Advisory Council of the ECA has five primary tasks:

1.To be ambassadors for International Trade and the Export Council of Australia.

2.To represent the Export Council of Australia to business and Government both in Australia and in overseas markets.

3.To provide input to the Export Council of Australia on key international trade issues, submissions on policy and at local and international forums engaged in debate on international trade.

4.Attend where practical Export Council of Australia events and activities as special guests of the Export Council of Australia.

5.Participate, where practical in the Export Council of Australia’s Industry Working Groups.

National Advisory Council members have no fiduciary responsibilities, however they will be required to participate in assisting the Export Council of Australia to contribute to the development of Australia’s resources through encouraging Australian business to engage in international trade, effective representation to government on market access and facilitation issues, the delivery of practical professional development programs and forums that foster the exchange of ideas and knowledge and reward excellence.

Paul Henry

Bachelor of Design Studies, 1983; Bachelor of Architecture, 1987
Senior Principal, Populous

Paul is an internationally recognised expert in the design and master planning of stadia, racecourses, arenas and the planning of Olympic Games. He is an Australian architect with worldwide success. Paul sits on the global board of the world’s largest specialist architecture practice, Populous, as both an owner of the worldwide firm , Chairman of global strategy ,and CEO of the Asia Pacific region. Paul obtained a Bachelor’s degree in both Architecture and Design from the University of Queensland and is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects.

During his extensive career, Paul has led the design of world renowned sports and entertainment buildings. In Australia, the newest project is the HASSELL + Populous design of the new Sydney International Convention Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct at Darling Harbour. Paul’s stadia projects include the first stage of the new major stadium in Perth, Suncorp stadium in Brisbane, Skilled Park Stadium on the Gold Coast, and the award winning ANZ Stadium for the Sydney Olympic games (through a Populous joint venture, Bligh Lobb sports architecture). In Asia he has directed design teams for Nanjing Sports Park for the China National Games, Datong Sports Park in China, Taiwan Arena, Manila Arena and masterplanning on the racecourses for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Populous has been involved in many of the world’s iconic stadia, including the 2012 London Olympic stadium, where Paul had a Design Review role as he did with Wembley stadium, Millennium Stadium Cardiff and Arsenal Football Club.

Many of Paul’s stadium designs have become a centrepiece for a city’s development, a legacy for their communities incorporating innovative design with environmental sustainability, and an opportunity to showcase Australian skills and expertise. Governments throughout Asia have invited Paul to lead discussions on the procurement and design of Sports, Event & Entertainment facilities to best suit the needs of a city and its community. Paul has pioneered innovative design solutions in approaching the atmosphere and psychology of very large crowds within entertainment facilities. Paul is also an international speaker on design and has addressed the UIA/IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland; and the World Sports Summit in Beijing, China. Paul cites his design education at the University of Queensland as being of the highest calibre that has informed his design approach to all his projects.

All Populous work in Asia is managed from its Asia Pacific headquarters in Brisbane. For more than a decade, Paul has been involved in the promotion of Australian trade and in particular promotion of Australian Professional Design Services and Creative Industries expertise and was recognized as an Australian Export Hero by the Governor General in 2010 from the Export Council of Australia. He is only the third Australian architect to ever have received this award. Paul continues to work at a Federal and State level to promote Queensland exporters.

Richard Rains, CEO of Sanger Australia

Richard Rains - Richard grew up on a mixed farm in the central west of NSW. Educated in Sydney and went on to a cadetship with Dalgety, and ended up in their beef export division. Whilst there, in 1974, he sold the first beef to Korea that the country ever imported & it quickly grew to become Australia’s third largest export market for beef, which it remains today. Richard then joined Sanger Australia in 1976 & thanks to the generosity of the then owner, & Richards mentor John Cooper, he started buying shares in it, and completed that buy-out in 2000, along with his long term business partner Graham Greenhalgh.

In the late 1990’s he convinced McDonalds North America that they should use Aussie beef in their burgers in North America & was instrumental in establishing that trade for Australia whilst the rest of the industry told him he was wasting his time. McDonalds remains one of Richard’s favourite customers & the tonnage that McDonalds North America import from Australia today is very significant. Sanger has gone on to supply beef to McDonalds, not only in USA but also Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, & much of South East Asia as well as domestically in Australia.
Today Sanger Australia is one of the larger privately owned meat marketing companies representing a number of abattoirs with their export sales & marketing activities to the world.

Sanger Australia Pty Ltd is also a pioneer & prominent processor/marketer of organic beef & lamb under the name of the Arcadian Organic & Natural Meat Co.

Richard was a director of The Co-operative Research Centre for Beef Genetic Technologies (Beef CRC) based at the UNE Armidale from 2008 to 2012 & was a recipient of the Australian Export Heroes award in 2012.

Sid Gray

Sid Gray is Professor of International Business at the University of Sydney. He is currently Chair of the International Business group and was formerly Head of the School of Business. He has a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) degree from the University of Sydney and a PhD from the University of Lancaster. His research interests include internationalization processes and business performance, the effectiveness of cross-cultural and expatriate management, the global convergence of accounting standards, and international corporate governance and transparency. He is the author/co-author of more than 200 publications including papers in leading journals such as Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Management International Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Relations, and Journal of Accounting Research. He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Financial Management and Accounting based at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Sid was formerly a Professor at the Universities of Glasgow, Warwick, and New South Wales and has also been a visiting professor at many schools including the University of Amsterdam, Stockholm School of Economics, National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan and the University of Hawaii. Prior to academe, Sid’s business experience included several years as a manager with a British trading company in the UK and India. Sid is a Fellow of the Academy of International Business and Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
